Melbourne's Secondhand Surfboard Specialist
Surfsmith specialises in quality secondhand surfboards in Melbourne, with a constantly changing range of boards from Australian and international shapers. From everyday shortboards and performance boards to twin fins, fishes, midlengths and longboards, our aim is to make it easier to find a great used surfboard without taking your chances on an unknown board online.
Every secondhand surfboard we sell is individually inspected and given a condition rating, with clear photos and information about dimensions, volume, construction and condition wherever available. Our boards come and go quickly, so the selection above is regularly updated with our latest arrivals.
Whether you're looking for your everyday board, something for smaller waves, a step-up, a midlength for easier days or simply want to try a completely different design, buying secondhand is a great way to expand your quiver.
Why Buy a Secondhand Surfboard?
Apart from saving money, one of the best things about buying a used surfboard is the opportunity to experiment.
Surfboards vary enormously. Different lengths, widths, rocker, rails, bottom contours, tails, fin configurations and constructions can completely change the way a board feels in the water. Buying secondhand makes it much easier to try different designs and discover what actually works for you.
It also keeps good surfboards in the water for longer. Surfboards require considerable materials and energy to manufacture, so extending the useful life of an existing board makes sense environmentally as well as financially.
A well-made surfboard that's been looked after can have many years of surfing left in it.
Choosing the Right Used Surfboard
There's much more to choosing a surfboard than simply looking at its length or volume.
Your ability, size, fitness, where you normally surf and the type of waves you want the board for all matter. A board that's perfect for one surfer may be completely wrong for another.
At Surfsmith, we're surfers and we're happy to talk through the options. Tell us what you're currently riding, how it's working for you, where you normally surf and what you'd like your next board to do differently.
And because we deal with secondhand boards every day, we're also realistic about condition. Cosmetic marks don't necessarily affect how a board surfs, while poorly repaired damage or structural problems can matter considerably more. We inspect our boards and clearly describe their condition so you can make an informed decision. You can be confident in our advice as we have, and are very proud of, a 5-star Google rating.
Shortboards, Midlengths, Longboards & Alternative Shapes
Our Melbourne secondhand surfboard range changes constantly depending on what comes through the door.
You'll regularly find performance shortboards, everyday shortboards and grovellers alongside twin fins, fishes and alternative shapes. We also carry a changing selection of midlengths, longboards and performance longboards.
Stock includes boards from established Australian and international surfboard brands and shapers as well as interesting boards from smaller and independent shapers.
If you're not sure exactly what you're looking for, that's part of the fun. One of the advantages of shopping secondhand is discovering boards and designs you may not have considered buying new.
Check back regularly — new boards are added as they arrive.
Buying and Selling Secondhand Surfboards at Surfsmith
Surfsmith isn't only a place to buy used surfboards. We also help Melbourne surfers sell, trade and consign surfboards they no longer ride.
If you've got a board sitting in the garage gathering dust, bring it in and we'll have a look. Depending on the board and its condition, we may be able to buy it, trade it in against another board or sell it for you on consignment.
That constant turnover is what keeps the Surfsmith range interesting. Boards find new owners, surfers get to try something different and good surfboards stay in the water rather than being forgotten in the shed.
We also offer professional surfboard repairs in Melbourne for PU and EPS boards, from everyday dings and rail damage through to fin boxes, noses, tails, creases, snaps and more substantial repairs.
Visit Surfsmith in Carnegie, Melbourne
Surfsmith is based in Carnegie in Melbourne's south-east, so you can come in and actually see a board before you buy it.
For secondhand surfboards, we think that's important. You can pick the board up, give it "the under the arm test", check the rails and deck, look at its condition and get a much better sense of the shape than you can from photographs alone.
Most importantly, you can have a conversation about whether the board is actually right for you.
We're always adding new stock, so if you can't find what you're looking for today, keep an eye on our latest secondhand surfboards or get in touch and tell us what you're chasing.
Buy better boards. Try different shapes. Keep good surfboards in the water.
